A heart rate zone is a range of heart rates that corresponds to a specific level of intensity and type of exercise:
 
Zone 1
50–60% of your maximum heart rate, this is the target range for warm-up and recovery
Zone 2
60–70% of your maximum heart rate, this is the target range for aerobic and base fitness work
Zone 3
70–80% of your maximum heart rate, this is the range for aerobic endurance work
Zone 4
80–90% of your maximum heart rate, this is for anaerobic capacity
Zone 5
90–100% of your maximum heart rate, this is the target zone for short burst speed training
 
Your maximum heart rate (HRmax) is the highest number of beats per minute your heart can handle safely during physical activity.
 
You can use your HRmax to set a target heart rate for more efficient training. Exercise physiologists and clinicians recommend exercising at 70–85% of your HRmax. You can also use your HRmax to calculate your target heart rate at different levels of exertion:
 
Sedentary: 57–67% of your HRmax
Minimal activity: 64–74% of your HRmax
Sporadic exercise: 74–84% of your HRmax
Regular exercise: 80–91% of your HRmax
High intensity exercise: 84–94% of your HRmax
